Use a Koufonisia boat only for a permitted offshore perspective, with landing removed from the plan
The useful purpose of a Keros boat outing is perspective. From the channel west of the island, its relationship with Kato Koufonisi, Dhaskalio and the maritime routes of the Small Cyclades becomes clear in a way that a map cannot reproduce. Enquire on Ano Koufonisi about a licensed skipper who knows the current restrictions and can describe a route that remains offshore. Ask what will actually be visible, how long the exposed crossing lasts and whether the operator provides correctly sized lifejackets. A private charter still does not create a right to land.
Treat the excursion as optional. Meltemi, swell, active archaeological work or an instruction from authorities should cancel or alter it without argument. Do not book from an advertisement that promises unrestricted beaches or access to ruins, and do not ask for swimming in the narrow Dhaskalio channel. Carry sun protection and water, keep cameras inside the boat when manoeuvring and follow the skipper immediately. If no responsible route is available, views from Koufonisia and the museum collections provide a better visit than forcing proximity.
