Aegina pairs the Temple of Aphaia and neoclassical harbour towns with pine-backed beaches, fishing villages and the island's celebrated pistachios.
Aegina is close enough to Athens for a day trip, but it rewards a slower visit. The Temple of Aphaia crowns a wooded hill in the east, while the sanctuary of Apollo stands near Aegina Town. Inland roads pass pistachio orchards, the medieval settlement of Paleochora and the monastery of Agios Nektarios.
The coast changes character from the family beaches of Agia Marina to the fishing harbour at Perdika. Boats cross to the islet of Moni in summer, and waterfront tavernas make the most of the day's catch. Look for fresh pistachios in early autumn and local products throughout the year.
Practical information
Fast ferries and conventional boats leave Piraeus throughout the year. Aegina Town is walkable; buses reach Agia Marina, Perdika and the Temple of Aphaia, while a car helps with inland villages.
