Areopoli is the historic heart of inner Mani, known for fortified family towers, the 1821 uprising and a lively food scene in pedestrian stone lanes.
Areopoli's austere tower houses reflect Mani's clan history and defensive architecture. At the Church of the Taxiarchs, local leaders declared revolt against Ottoman rule in March 1821, a moment commemorated in the main square.
The old centre now holds thoughtful guesthouses and tavernas serving syglino smoked pork, local pasta and olive oil. Diros Caves, Limeni and the deeper Mani peninsula make the town an excellent base.
Practical information
A car is essential for Mani. Park outside the pedestrian core, reserve holiday weekends and check cave access and sea conditions before driving to Diros.
