Edessa is built around rivers and dramatic waterfalls, with an old quarter, industrial water heritage and easy access to northern mountain landscapes.
Water defines Edessa. Streams cross the centre before dropping over the escarpment at Karanos Falls, where paths descend beside the spray and open views across the plain. Restored mills and the open-air Water Museum explain how that force supported local industry.
Varosi, the old Christian quarter, preserves traditional Macedonian houses and quiet lanes above the falls. Edessa also works as a base for Pozar thermal baths, the ski slopes of Kaimaktsalan and the wetlands around Lake Vegoritida.
Practical information
Intercity buses and trains connect Edessa with Thessaloniki. The waterfall paths can be slippery, and winter drivers should check road conditions towards mountain villages and ski areas.
