Messolonghi is a Sacred City of the Greek Revolution, set within a vast lagoon complex shaped by salt, fishing and migratory birds.
The 1826 Exodus after a long Ottoman siege made Messolonghi a central symbol of Greek independence. The Garden of Heroes, museums and reconstructed gate hold the memory of residents and international philhellenes, including Lord Byron.
The lagoon is equally important. Traditional pelades fishing huts, salt pans and ivari enclosures support a distinctive economy and produce avgotaraho, the protected local bottarga. Cycling the flat edges reveals changing water and birdlife.
