Stone bridges, steep villages and river country in the southern Pindus.
Tzoumerka is a rugged mountain region of high peaks, monasteries, waterfalls and villages spread above the Arachthos and Kalarrytikos rivers.
The Athamanika mountains, widely called Tzoumerka, rise sharply between Epirus and Thessaly. Villages such as Pramanta, Kalarrytes and Syrrako preserve stone architecture, while Kipina Monastery is built into a cliff above a narrow gorge.
Rafting on the Arachthos, hiking to waterfalls and visiting old bridges require substantial driving between valleys. The region remains less polished than Zagori and rewards travellers comfortable with changing weather and independent planning.
Practical information
A car is essential and fuel stations are sparse. Avoid night driving, check mountain and river conditions, and use certified guides for rafting or technical hikes.
