Bastione Malvasia Hotel

A characterful hotel beside Monemvasia’s eastern wall, pairing excellent views and family-sized stone suites with a peaceful terrace and a generous breakfast.

Our take

Sea-facing stone rooms at the quiet end of the castle town

Bastione Malvasia stands beside the restored eastern wall, at the far and quiet end of Monemvasia’s lower town. Its stone rooms retain arches, timber ceilings and fireplaces while providing the modern comforts needed after a day on the Rock. Sea-view doubles make the most of the position, but the maisonettes and 40-square-metre family suites are the useful discovery for groups who rarely find this much space inside the castle. Breakfast is generous, and the small café terrace is an exceptional place for an unhurried drink above the open water.

The same secluded position creates the practical warning. Cars stop outside the gate and Bastione is a long walk along polished, uneven cobbles, followed by steps for some rooms. Bring a light overnight bag, wear shoes with grip and ask about assistance before arrival; this is a poor match for limited mobility or cumbersome pushchairs. There is no pool or parking, and only specific categories have the headline balcony view. Bastione Malvasia is Monemvasia’s best spacious in-castle hotel for travellers who want stillness, sea and historic atmosphere—and who accept that reaching the most peaceful address inside the walls takes a little effort.
