Euboea Road Trip: North to South

Eight days tracing Greece's long second-largest island from spa-town north through forest and ferry ports to the exposed southern cape.

Route overview

A journey worth taking slowly

Euboea is an island that drives like a region

The bridge at Chalkida can make Euboea feel like an Athens excursion. It is long, mountainous and locally varied. A full north-to-south journey needs a week and a willingness to accept one substantial central transfer.

Begin in Chalkida, then move north to Limni and Edipsos. Check road status carefully in areas affected by fire, flood or repair work and never follow a navigation shortcut through damaged forest roads. Return through the centre towards Kymi rather than expecting a quick coastal line.

The southern finish

Eretria breaks the journey before Karystos and the Cavo Doro landscape. Southern winds can be strong and ferry options change seasonally. If leaving by ferry rather than returning to Chalkida, confirm the exact port and vehicle reservation before finalising the one-way plan.

Beach parking is informal in places but should never become destructive. Keep tracks, access gates and emergency lanes clear, especially during high fire danger.

Driving notes

Build in time for unplanned stops, refuel before mountain stretches, and avoid driving after dark on unfamiliar rural roads.

The route, stop by stop

  1. 1

    Chalkida

Start at the Euripus waterfront and use a hotel car park. Leave after commuter traffic for the northern road.

    1 night
  2. 2

    Limni

Use the small waterfront town as a northern base. Ask locally about current forest routes and accessible beaches.

    2 nights
  3. 3

    Edipsos

Give the spa town an overnight rather than a parking stop. Waterfront spaces fill in summer, so confirm hotel arrangements.

    1 night
  4. 4

    Kymi

This is the long cross-island day. Arrive before dark and use Kymi as a reset rather than adding another remote beach.

    1 night
  5. 5

    Eretria

Break the southbound route with archaeology and an easy waterfront. Check museum and site hours directly.

    1 night
  6. 6

    Karystos

Finish beneath Mount Ochi with one weather-led coastal or walking day. Strong wind changes both road and ferry plans.
