The fortified centre that gave a civilisation its name
Mycenae rewards a visit in the correct order. Start with the museum to understand the palace economy, burials and Linear B world, then pass through the Lion Gate and climb towards the megaron. The scale of the walls and view across the Argolid explain why this centre controlled routes and resources long before classical Athens.
The Treasury of Atreus stands outside the main enclosure and needs its own stop. Allow two and a half hours across both areas, wear shoes with grip and expect little shade. Arrive early or late in the day, never leave luggage visible in the car, and base in Nafplio rather than treating the site as an exhausting Athens return trip.
