Sacred Macedonian ground below Mount Olympus
Dion was sacred to Macedon before it was urban. Sanctuaries developed on the wet plain below Olympus, and the later city added streets, houses, baths and theatres. Water still shapes the visit, with springs and seasonal growth making the park feel very different from the dry ruins of southern Greece.
Begin or finish at the archaeological museum in the modern village; important sculptures and the water organ need that context. Allow three hours across park and museum, wear shoes suitable for damp paths and carry insect protection. Dion works naturally with Litochoro, not as a hurried stop between Thessaloniki and Meteora.
