Dodona’s appeal lies in the relationship between sanctuary and landscape. Worshippers sought answers from Zeus, interpreting natural and metallic sounds associated with the sacred oak, while the later theatre gives the site a monumental scale. The low foundations around the sanctuary need interpretation; the theatre supplies the immediate drama.
Allow ninety minutes and read about the lead oracle tablets before arrival, since their small written questions reveal ordinary ancient anxieties better than any grand façade. The site is an easy drive from Ioannina and pairs well with the city’s archaeological museum. Weather can be wet outside summer, and the open ground offers limited shelter.
