The sanctuary behind one of the ancient world’s largest temples
The lone column at the Heraion can mislead visitors into expecting a small site. It marks one of the largest temples attempted in the Greek world, within a sanctuary used and rebuilt across many centuries. Foundations, altars, votive bases and the Sacred Way reveal Samos’s wealth and maritime connections.
Use the site plan carefully and allow ninety minutes. The ground is flat but exposed, and mosquitoes can be present near wetter areas. Pair the Heraion with Pythagoreio and the Eupalinos Tunnel only if timed-entry arrangements align; otherwise split them across two mornings. The archaeological museum in Vathy contains major sculpture from the sanctuary and completes the visit.
