Walk from Spilaio to a stone bridge set directly beneath the narrow walls of Portitsa Gorge
Portitsa works because bridge and landscape cannot be separated. The two-arched crossing, generally dated to 1743, stands where the Venetikos enters a narrow rock corridor below Spilaio. A stone path links the bridge with the village, turning the visit into a real walk rather than a roadside photograph. Water level, shade and the colour of the plane trees change the setting substantially through the year.
Drive only as far as conditions and signs permit, then continue on foot. Rockfall, mud and fast water are serious risks after rain or snowmelt; entering the gorge is not an automatic extension of the bridge visit. Wear shoes with grip, keep children away from unprotected edges and never park where emergency or farm vehicles need to pass. Allow at least two hours from Spilaio and ask locally about the current path before setting out.
