Cross the island slowly through heather, olives and scattered homes instead of treating Porto as the whole destination
The walk reveals the source of the island's name: eriki, or heather, among olive trees, cypress and dense seasonal vegetation. Rather than one formal trail, expect a network of lanes and paths connecting homes and shores. The pleasure is scale, shade and ordinary island land use.
Ask for a current route, carry an offline map and avoid entering private drives. Fire risk can close paths in summer, while vegetation and mud alter them in winter. Take water, control dogs around livestock and finish before dusk.
