Makry Gialos combines a sheltered sandy bay, gradual water and complete village services, making it one of southeast Crete's easiest family bases.
Our take
A shallow village beach made for unhurried swims
The main beach at Makry Gialos curves through the heart of the village, with fine sand, a gradual entry and tavernas directly behind the waterfront. Its sheltered position usually delivers gentler swimming than the more open bays farther east.
Space narrows around restaurant terraces and organised seating in peak season, so arrive early or walk toward the ends. Small boats use the harbour side and should be given a wide berth. Parking is scattered through village streets rather than concentrated in one large beach lot.
