A village beach below caves and sandstone cliffs
Matala’s beach, caves and village form one small stage. The cliffs carry ancient burials and a later countercultural mythology, while the waterfront now has the energy and facilities of a popular resort.
Visit the archaeological cave area only during official hours and stay behind barriers; friable rock is not a climbing surface. The bay can become rough in southerly conditions. Sleep locally if you want the setting without midday traffic, then use the morning for Phaistos or the Messara landscape rather than another long beach drive.
