Balos Lagoon

A shallow lagoon and pale sand below the Gramvousa peninsula, reached by regulated road and foot approach or by seasonal excursion boat from Kissamos.

Our take

Western Crete’s lagoon, with access that must be planned

Balos is a landscape before it is a beach: open lagoon, sandbars and the hard profile of Gramvousa. The overland route includes an unpaved section and a walk exposed to sun; excursion boats trade that effort for fixed crowds and limited control over timing.

Check current access, road rules and boat schedules through official sources. Carry water and sun protection, wear proper shoes for the path and keep away from dunes and sensitive habitat. A rental agreement may exclude the access road. If mobility or heat makes the descent unsafe, the boat is not a lesser experience.
