Our take
An immense east-coast beach with no shelter from the Aegean
Mourteri runs for several kilometres below eastern Evia's hills. Small organised pockets sit near tavernas and rooms, while most of the beach remains open. The scale is the attraction: it is possible to move away from music and find an uncluttered stretch.
The open Aegean also defines the risk. Water deepens quickly and easterly wind can build a strong shore break with little warning. Choose a serviced section when conditions are uncertain, and keep children out when waves make the pebble line difficult to cross.
