Broad sand beyond Malia's busiest resort strip
Potamos lies east of Malia's main beach zone, close to the archaeological site and a low wetland landscape. Its broad sand and dunes feel less urban than the resort centre, although organised sections, tavernas and easy road access still make it a popular day beach.
North wind can raise waves and currents across the open Cretan Sea. Follow flags, keep off fenced dune vegetation and avoid leaving belongings on marked nesting areas. Parking fills in high season, and the hot sand makes footwear useful between the car and water.
