Malia combines a busy summer nightlife resort with an atmospheric old village and one of Crete's most important Minoan palace sites.
Modern Malia has a split personality. The coastal strip is built around beaches, bars and package holidays, while the old town inland keeps narrow lanes, small squares and Cretan tavernas. Travellers should choose their base according to the experience they want.
East of town, the Minoan Palace of Malia preserves storerooms, workshops and monumental courts in a quieter setting than Knossos. The site and nearby mountains give cultural depth to a destination too often reduced to its nightlife.
