A lakeside Cretan town with Mirabello Gulf at its doorstep.
Agios Nikolaos centres on the deep-blue Lake Voulismeni, with waterfront restaurants, a strong archaeological museum and beaches around Mirabello Gulf.
Agios Nikolaos wraps around Lake Voulismeni, a small circular harbour linked to the sea by a canal. Cafés climb the surrounding slopes, and the Archaeological Museum presents finds from eastern Crete, including the important Minoan cemetery at Agia Fotia.
The town makes a practical base for Mirabello Gulf. Boats visit Spinalonga, beaches line the road to Elounda, and the mountain villages of Kritsa and Kroustas offer Byzantine frescoes, weaving traditions and excellent walking.
Practical information
Buses connect Agios Nikolaos with Heraklion, Elounda, Ierapetra and Sitia. The centre is hilly but walkable; use boats or buses for Spinalonga rather than rushing by car.
