Chora Sfakion is the transport hinge of southwest Crete, linking mountain roads with ferries to car-free villages, gorges and remote beaches.
Chora Sfakion sits at the end of a dramatic descent from the Askifou plateau. The village is compact, with a small harbour, pebble beaches and tavernas serving Sfakian pies. Its real importance is as the gateway to Crete's roadless southwest coast.
Ferries connect Loutro, Agia Roumeli, Sougia and Gavdos, while walkers arrive from Imbros Gorge or continue along the E4 coastal trail. History is close too: nearby Frangokastello recalls Venetian rule and local resistance.
Practical information
Bus and ferry schedules are coordinated only on some routes, so plan the whole connection before setting out. Parking fills after gorge arrivals; carry cash and sun protection.
