Argostoli is Kefalonia's practical centre, known for loggerhead turtles in Koutavos Lagoon, the De Bosset bridge and strong island food.
Argostoli was largely rebuilt after the 1953 earthquake, so its character comes from daily life rather than preserved Venetian streets. The waterfront market attracts loggerhead turtles following fishing boats, while the long De Bosset bridge crosses the shallow Koutavos Lagoon.
Museums, bakeries and restaurants make this the island's best urban base. Nearby Katavothres sinkholes connect to Kefalonia's unusual underground water system, and boats cross the bay to Lixouri.

The airport is a short drive away and buses serve major towns seasonally. Observe turtles from a distance, never feed them and keep clear of fishing operations.
