Assos is a tiny Kefalonian village wrapped around a sheltered bay, with a demanding but beautiful walk to a large Venetian castle.
Assos sits on a narrow isthmus below cypress-covered slopes, its pastel houses and small beach reflected in a calm bay. A paved path climbs around the peninsula to the walls of a sixteenth-century Venetian fortress.
The village is exceptionally photogenic but very small. Staying after day visitors leave allows time for a swim and castle walk without traffic pressure. Nearby Myrtos adds one of Kefalonia's most dramatic beaches.
Practical information
A car is the usual access, but parking is limited above the village. Walk the castle in cooler hours and avoid the route during high wind or thunderstorms.
