Cape Sounion is defined by the Temple of Poseidon, a dramatic headland where archaeology, sea views and sunset draw visitors from Athens.
The fifth-century BCE Temple of Poseidon stands above sheer cliffs at the end of the Attica peninsula. Its surviving Doric columns frame views across the Saronic Gulf and towards the Cyclades, making the site especially atmospheric in the softer light before sunset.
Sounion is more than a viewpoint. Small coves and beaches sit beneath the headland, and the coastal drive from Athens passes the changing landscapes of the Riviera. The archaeological site is compact, but the exposed location and busy sunset period reward thoughtful timing.
