A working island capital with a castle quarter, museums and maritime energy.
Chios Town combines a busy ferry port with a lived-in medieval castle, archaeological collections, markets and access to the citrus estates of Kampos.
The walled castle district remains a residential neighbourhood containing Ottoman monuments, baths and the tomb traditionally associated with Kara Ali. Outside the walls, the waterfront, market and libraries show a city shaped by shipping and education.
The Archaeological Museum and Byzantine Museum provide context before travelling to the mastic villages and Nea Moni. Kampos begins south of town, where high walls conceal orchard estates and distinctive Genoese-influenced houses.
Practical information
Ferries dock on the central waterfront and the airport is close. Traffic and parking are difficult; explore the castle on foot and rent a car only for island touring.
