Why go

Apollo's sanctuary and mountain views at the centre of the ancient Greek world.

Delphi combines the Temple of Apollo, theatre, stadium and treasury-lined Sacred Way with a major museum beneath Mount Parnassos.

Ancient Greeks regarded Delphi as the navel of the world and came to consult Apollo's oracle. The Sacred Way climbs past treasuries to the temple, theatre and stadium, all set above an immense valley of olive trees.

The Archaeological Museum is indispensable, housing the Charioteer, Sphinx of Naxos and sculpture from the sanctuaries. Across the road, the Sanctuary of Athena Pronaia and gymnasium broaden the visit beyond the main enclosure.

Practical information

Buses run from Athens, but an overnight stay allows an early start. The site is steep and exposed; check combined museum hours and wear secure shoes.
