Mirabello Gulf resorts, calm water and the history of Spinalonga.
Elounda pairs polished coastal hotels with a working harbour, sheltered beaches and boat trips to the former leper colony on Spinalonga.
Elounda occupies a protected corner of Mirabello Gulf, where salt pans and a narrow causeway lead towards the Kolokytha peninsula. The remains of ancient Olous lie partly submerged near the channel, a quiet counterpoint to the luxury resorts lining the coast.
Boats cross to Spinalonga, the Venetian fortress island later used as a leprosy settlement. The visit deserves historical context rather than a quick photo stop. Back in Elounda, seafood tavernas and calm bays make the area particularly comfortable for an easy-paced stay.
Practical information
Frequent buses connect Elounda with Agios Nikolaos in season. Boats to Spinalonga also leave Plaka; go early, carry water and check the last return sailing.
