Heraklion is often treated as a gateway, but its museums justify a stay. The Archaeological Museum holds the defining objects of Minoan Crete, from palace frescoes to the Phaistos Disc, while nearby Knossos places them within a complex Bronze Age centre. The Historical Museum and Venetian walls carry the story forward.
The modern city is busy, direct and deeply Cretan. The central market, coffee shops and restaurants showcase island produce without the stage-set atmosphere of a resort. Walk to the Koules fortress at the old harbour, then explore wine country around Archanes and Peza.
Practical information
City buses serve Knossos and the airport. The centre is compact but traffic-heavy; stay within the walls, reserve a timed Knossos visit in peak season and use intercity buses for other Cretan cities.
