Hydra's amphitheatrical harbour is framed by grey-stone captains' houses built on the wealth of an important maritime community. Museums and historic homes explain the island's role in the Greek War of Independence, while galleries continue a creative tradition that has drawn writers and artists for decades.
There are no private cars or motorbikes. Stone paths climb to monasteries and cross the island's dry interior, while a coastal trail links swimming spots at Kamini, Vlychos and beyond. Donkeys still carry luggage uphill, but they should be used responsibly and only through reputable handlers.

Hydra is reached by high-speed ferry from Piraeus and ports in the eastern Peloponnese. Pack light for steep lanes, book harbour-area rooms early and use water taxis for beaches beyond walking range.
