Why go

A lively gateway town directly beneath the rocks of Meteora.

Kalambaka provides hotels, restaurants, museums and transport for Meteora, with the rock pillars rising immediately beyond its streets.

Kalambaka occupies the plain below Meteora's sandstone towers. Its Byzantine Church of the Dormition preserves ancient masonry and layered frescoes, while museums devoted to natural history and mushrooms add unexpected local interest.

The town is more practical than picturesque, but staying here gives easy access to monasteries, guided hikes and evening views after tour buses leave. Nearby Kastraki offers a quieter village alternative closer to the rocks.

Practical information

Trains and buses connect with Athens and Thessaloniki, sometimes requiring changes. Use local buses or guides for monasteries and verify current rail arrangements.
