Karlovasi is a multi-centred university town shaped by tanning and tobacco, with grand mansions, abandoned factories and access to Potami.
Karlovasi prospered through leather tanning and tobacco, leaving neoclassical houses and striking industrial buildings across its separate neighbourhoods. The Tannery Museum explains the labour and trade behind those ruins.
West of the port, Potami beach leads to a waterfall walk through woodland and shallow water, while the church of Metamorfosi adds Byzantine history. Karlovasi feels more like a working town than a resort.
Practical information
Some ferries use Karlovasi and others Vathy. The town is spread out; use buses or taxis between port, centre and Potami, and wear water shoes for the waterfall route.
