Kissamos provides a grounded base for western Crete's famous beaches, with an archaeological museum, local wine country and a busy ferry port.
Kissamos remains a market town rather than a beach resort. Its Archaeological Museum displays mosaics and finds from ancient Kissamos, while nearby Polyrrinia occupies a commanding hilltop with walls, cisterns and views across the olive country.
Boats for Balos leave from Kavonisi port, and the road west reaches Falassarna's broad sand and ancient harbour. The surrounding villages produce olive oil, wine and chestnuts, making Kissamos a useful base for exploring rather than simply passing through.

Intercity buses run from Chania. Balos boat and road access are crowded in summer and subject to conservation controls; start early and consider quieter western-coast alternatives.
