Koroni combines a lived-in fortress, old-town lanes, harbour tavernas and long beaches on the southwestern Peloponnese.
Koroni's castle occupies a broad headland and still contains homes, churches, gardens and a monastery within its walls. Below, tiled roofs descend to a fishing harbour with views across the Messinian Gulf.
Zaga beach stretches south beneath the fortress, while nearby villages and olive groves keep the area rooted in agriculture. Koroni is calmer than better-known Nafplio and works well as part of a slow Messinian coast route.
Practical information
A car is the easiest access from Kalamata or Pylos. Fortress paths are uneven and residential; keep gates clear and avoid midday summer climbs.
