The plain of Marathon is inseparable from the 490 BCE battle that gave the modern race its name. The burial mound of the Athenians and the Archaeological Museum provide the clearest context, while the starting point of the annual Athens Marathon links the landscape to a continuing sporting tradition.
Nearby Schinias National Park protects wetlands, pine forest and a long shallow bay popular for swimming and wind sports. The area feels markedly more open than central Athens, with archaeological visits and time outdoors fitting comfortably into one day.
Practical information
A car is the easiest way to combine the museum, burial mound, lake and Schinias. Regional buses serve the area, but stops and frequencies require advance planning.
