Methoni is defined by its vast Venetian-Ottoman castle and offshore Bourtzi tower, alongside a sandy town beach and relaxed coastal life.
Methoni Castle occupies a long promontory once vital to Venetian sea routes. Walls enclose ruined baths, churches and houses before a stone causeway reaches the octagonal Bourtzi tower surrounded by water.
The modern village is low-key, with a shallow beach and tavernas facing the fortress. Nearby Sapientza and Finikounda add boat and beach options, while Pylos and Koroni complete a rich fortification route.
Practical information
Methoni is easiest by car from Kalamata or Pylos. The castle is large and exposed; carry water, check closing time and avoid the causeway in severe wind.
