Mystras

Mystras is a UNESCO-listed fortified city where palaces, monasteries and exceptional frescoes climb a steep hill near Sparta.

Mystras became the capital of the Byzantine Despotate of the Morea and a major centre of learning and art. Churches such as the Peribleptos and Pantanassa preserve luminous frescoes, while the restored palace and fortress reveal the city's political scale.

The site rises sharply through lower and upper gates, with views across the Sparta plain to Taygetos. It rewards several hours and historical context rather than a quick climb to the castle.
