Naousa is the heartland of Xinomavro, a red grape capable of long-lived wines with savoury depth. Estates around the town welcome visitors by appointment, while local restaurants match the wines with Macedonian meat dishes, pies and seasonal produce.
The Arapitsa River cuts through town and feeds the wooded park of Agios Nikolaos. Nearby, the School of Aristotle at Mieza and important Macedonian tombs connect the landscape to Philip II and Alexander. Winter brings skiers to 3-5 Pigadia on Mount Vermio.
Practical information
A car is useful for wineries, Mieza and the ski centre. Reserve tastings, check archaeological-site hours and expect snow or ice on mountain roads in winter.
