Why go

A seaside village at the threshold of Mount Athos.

Ouranoupoli is the main departure point for Mount Athos cruises and pilgrim ferries, centred on a Byzantine tower and a relaxed waterfront.

The Tower of Prosforion stands beside Ouranoupoli's harbour, a reminder of the monastic estates that shaped this coast. Excursion boats leave for cruises along the western shore of Mount Athos, offering views of monasteries to travellers who cannot enter the autonomous monastic state.

The village also has sandy beaches, seafood tavernas and boats to the Drenia islets. It works as more than a departure lounge, particularly in the quieter hours after cruise groups return.

Practical information

Men entering Mount Athos need an advance diamonitirion permit; women cannot enter the territory. Anyone can join approved coastal cruises. Buses connect Ouranoupoli with Thessaloniki.
