Two beaches and an easygoing town on Crete's southwest coast.
Paleochora occupies a narrow peninsula between sandy and pebble beaches, with strong tavernas, coastal walks and ferries to remote southern villages.
Paleochora has water on both sides and a ruined Venetian fortress above the grid of low streets. Pachia Ammos offers broad sand to the west, while the eastern shore is more sheltered from some winds. The centre becomes pleasantly pedestrian in the evening.
Ferries connect Sougia, Agia Roumeli, Loutro and Gavdos, and sections of the E4 trail trace the coast. Inland villages and the Anidri Gorge provide quieter alternatives to beach days. Paleochora balances practical services with the independent spirit of southwest Crete.
Practical information
Direct buses run from Chania over a winding mountain road. Check ferry routes by day and weather, and choose the leeward beach when wind conditions change.
