Why go

A Crusader castle above a beach town on the Olympus coast.

Platamonas combines a long summer beach, a lively seafront and one of northern Greece's most imposing medieval castles.

Platamon Castle stands on a strategic hill controlling the route between Macedonia and Thessaly. Its walls, towers and central keep command views across the Thermaic Gulf and towards Mount Olympus, making the climb as rewarding for the landscape as for the history.

Below, Platamonas is a popular family resort with a marina, fish restaurants and a long coast that continues towards Neoi Poroi. Nearby Old Panteleimon adds stone houses and mountain views for a contrasting afternoon.

Practical information

Trains and buses serve the coast, though the castle entrance is easiest by car or taxi. Visit early in summer, carry water and confirm site hours.
