Rethymno's old town is one of Crete's richest architectural ensembles. Venetian doorways, Ottoman mosques and shaded lanes spread below the Fortezza, while the small harbour and lighthouse hold the evening crowds. Museums and restored houses reward exploration beyond the shopping streets.
A long sandy beach begins east of the centre, but the city's greatest advantage is its position between coast and mountains. Arkadi Monastery, ancient Eleutherna, Margarites pottery village and the Amari valley all fit naturally into a longer stay. Restaurants draw confidently on regional cheese, lamb and wild greens.
Practical information
Buses connect Rethymno with Chania and Heraklion; there is no airport. Avoid driving inside the old town, and use organised transport if combining several inland sites.
