Samothrace is a rugged island dominated by Mount Saos, with the Sanctuary of the Great Gods, forest pools and a strong camping and hiking culture.
The Sanctuary of the Great Gods hosted mystery rites that drew initiates from across the ancient world; the Winged Victory of Samothrace once stood here. Its ruins occupy a wooded ravine near Paleopoli.
Mount Saos rises to 1,611 metres, feeding streams and waterfalls that form the vathres natural pools. Fonias is the best-known route, but flash floods, falling rocks and steep terrain make conditions serious. Chora adds a castle, slate roofs and evening tavernas.
Practical information
Ferries arrive at Kamariotissa from Alexandroupoli. Use marked trails, avoid pools after rain or during warnings and attempt the summit only with experience and suitable weather.
