Sapientza lies south of Methoni, known for its lighthouse, unusual evergreen forest and surrounding deep waters with protected archaeological remains.
Sapientza forms part of the Oinousses island group off Messinia. A dense forest of arbutus and evergreen shrubs covers part of the island, while a nineteenth-century lighthouse stands above its southern coast.
The surrounding sea lies on old maritime routes and contains significant wrecks and archaeology. Sapientza has no normal visitor village, so access must balance nature protection, lighthouse operations and weather.
Practical information
There is no scheduled ferry. Arrange authorised local boats from Methoni, verify landing rules and never dive or remove objects from archaeological waters.
