Why go

Spartan history, a modern valley city and Taygetos on the horizon.

Modern Sparta provides an archaeological museum, ancient acropolis and olive museum near Mystras and the rugged Taygetos landscape.

Ancient Sparta left fewer monumental ruins than its reputation suggests, but the acropolis preserves a theatre, sanctuary remains and views across the Eurotas valley. The Archaeological Museum displays sculpture including the figure often called Leonidas.

The Museum of the Olive and Greek Olive Oil is one of the city's strongest visits, connecting ancient agriculture to modern Peloponnesian life. Nearby Mystras and mountain routes into Taygetos give Sparta value as a base.

Practical information

Intercity buses connect Sparta with Athens and Kalamata. A car helps with Mystras and Taygetos; avoid expecting all ancient sites to be fully interpreted on the ground.
