Maritime history, bougainvillea and a hidden town pool
Bratsera hides an improbable amount of space a few level minutes from Hydra’s harbour. The building began life as an 1860 sponge factory, and its conversion preserves thick stone walls, timber roofs, machinery and broad workrooms rather than smoothing them into a generic island hotel. Rooms and maisonettes open around courtyards dense with jasmine and bougainvillea. At their centre is Hydra Town’s rarest amenity: a proper seasonal swimming pool. Breakfast is served in the garden, while the restaurant is good enough to attract diners who are not staying, making an evening at the hotel feel like a choice rather than a compromise.
Historic character brings irregularity. Rooms differ substantially in size, outlook and stair use; maisonettes have internal steps, the building has no lift and storage can be limited in some categories. The pool is open seasonally and closes in the early evening, and children aged 11 or younger are not accepted. There are no harbour views or beach access, although boats and the coastal path are close. Guests should still arrange help with luggage on a car-free island, even though the route from the ferry avoids the steepest lanes. Bratsera is Hydra Town’s best heritage hotel with a pool, made for adults and older families who prefer lived-in maritime character to polished uniformity.
