A peaceful base for black beaches and mastic villages
Emporios Bay Hotel stands a minute from the little fishing harbour at the island’s southern end. Its rooms, studios and apartments surround a garden and freshwater pool, providing more space and self-catering flexibility than the three-star label might imply. Mavra Volia’s dark volcanic pebbles are reached on foot, while Pyrgi, Olympi and the Chios Mastic Museum form a natural circuit by car.
Emporios is very small: a handful of waterfront tavernas, the beach and quiet evenings are the point. There is no useful public transport for an ambitious island itinerary, and Chios Town is roughly forty minutes away, so a rental car should be treated as essential. Some mattresses have historically felt firm to guests, and there is no lift. For travellers who accept those practical limits, this remains one of the island’s most satisfying good-value bases and a far better way to understand southern Chios than commuting daily from town.
