Six medieval suites and hosts who help Rhodes make sense
Kókkini Porta Rossa is what happens when a historic building is treated as a home rather than a theme. Set inside Rhodes’s medieval walls, the restored 14th-century residence holds just six suites, layered with old stone, collected art, textiles and unusually good bathrooms. Breakfast unfolds as a sequence of regional dishes in the shaded courtyard, with each plate carrying part of the island’s story. This is an adults-only house, not a conventional five-star resort. Cars cannot simply roll up through the pedestrian old town, so coordinate luggage and transfers in advance; old paving and internal steps also deserve consideration if mobility is limited. The lanes become wonderfully quiet at night, although reaching the newer town beaches takes a longer walk. Kókkini Porta Rossa is Rhodes Town’s best owner-led heritage stay for travellers who want informed hospitality and a genuine relationship with the place.
