Inside the walls, the medieval city is not a sealed monument but a neighbourhood of homes, shops, mosques and courtyards. The Palace of the Grand Master and Archaeological Museum explain the Knights' era, while the Ottoman library, baths and mosques add later layers.
Mandraki harbour and the New Town reflect Italian rule through civic buildings and broad boulevards. Elli Beach begins at the northern point, and restaurants extend well beyond the most tourist-heavy Old Town lanes.
Practical information
Ferries arrive beside the walls and airport buses stop in the New Town. The Old Town is pedestrian and cobbled; visit major monuments early and avoid restaurants relying on aggressive touts.
