Portaria’s most delicious address, right on the village square
Kritsa puts food at the centre of a stay without forgetting that it is a hotel. It occupies an old building on Portaria’s plane-shaded main square, above a restaurant that treats Pelion cooking as something living rather than ceremonial. Breakfast is a proper introduction to the mountain, rich in local pies, preserves and seasonal produce, and the same kitchen serves lunch and dinner. Rooms are individually decorated and range from compact doubles to connecting family options, some with fireplaces or balconies over the square. Step outside and village life is immediately around you; the lovely Centaurs’ Path begins roughly five minutes away, while Volos is close enough for an afternoon by the sea.
This is a sociable village inn, not a secluded resort. The smallest rooms really are small, the historic building has no lift and its stairs are narrow enough to make heavy luggage awkward. A square-facing balcony brings atmosphere but may also carry voices and church bells, especially on busy weekends. Parking is nearby rather than reliably at the bedroom door, and there is no pool or spa. Guests who do not care about eating well will miss much of the point. For curious travellers, however, Kritsa is Portaria’s outstanding food-led hotel: warm, rooted in its surroundings and unusually good at turning breakfast, a walk and dinner into one coherent experience.
